Nanuet's Tennyson's Park Re-Opens

NANUET, N.Y. -- Parents and children in the small neighborhood off Middletown Road in Nanuet were caught slightly off-guard in early October when their long-time playground were suddenly gone.

The new play area will be 3,700 square feet of poured-in-place rubber surfacing made from semi-recycled materials.

Yellow caution tape lined the chain link fence surrounding the park, some heavy equipment was parked within, and the playground equipment now looked like a pile of recyclables to be sorted.

The demolition and subsequent renovation of Tennyson Park playground, which is on Tennyson Drive in Nanuet, had been on the books since an Aug, 11 town meeting. The project includes removal of existing playground equipment and ground surface, as well as the installation of all new updated playground equipment by Miracle Recreation, and a new safety surface. Construction contract was awarded to Pettinelli Recreation Inc, out of Rensselaer, N.Y.

The new play area will be 3,700 square feet of poured-in-place rubber surfacing made from semi-recycled materials. These surfaces have a much higher safety standard and last considerably longer than more natural surfaces like wood chips and pebbles.

The playground will be broken into two separate play zones, one for ages 2-5 and the other for ages 5-12. Each area will have its own age-appropriate swing set as well. There will also remain a large grassy area; perfect for blankets, chairs and naps in the shade.

The original playground surface was large wood chips and mulch, which had been headed towards a mix of crab grass, thistle and weeds. It was moderately uneven and did not lend itself to child safely.
